How Do I Avoid Opening Any and All Messages in the Preview Window!

In Outlook Express, I was able to avoid opening messages unless I
double-clicked on them and then they opened in a separate window. In Windows
Mail, just highlighting an incoming messages causes it to appear in the
preview pane. How do I stop this and eliminate using the preview pane? I
prefer having the choice of deleting messages before opening them.

Menu bar (ALT if not visible) > View > Layout..., uncheck Show preview pane at
the bottom of the window
