In Word 2000, I used to be able to do this by going to the footer and
selectin inset autotext and filenam &path was an option. This does not
appear in Office XP Pro. Do I need to install Ms VBA to activate this? Or,
is there an easier solution!

I suspect that your normal.dot got replaced by another file. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm.
You'll want to rename normal.dot rather than delete it.
If that doesn't do the trick, write back.
