how do I add chapters and change the numbers on an existing docume

I have a very large document right now that I am updating and have been asked
to add chapters and the chapter and page number at bottom of page - I can add
the chapters but when I do it messes up the whole document - and nothing is
paged correctly nor are the chapter headings in the right place
