I understand i need Microsoft exchange. It seems unlikely that i shall
install MS Eschange 5.5 on my local computor. I use the Swedish opetator
Telia for my e-mail account.
What is needed for me to activate and use the absence handler
(fraanvarohanteraren, Swedish) in Outlook XP?

As you already know, the Out of Office Assistant is a feature of Outlook+Exchange, not Outlook by itself. Without an Exchange server to send the OOA messages, your alternative is to create a normal reply rule in Outlook and leave Outlook running.
