How do I access backed up private folders after reformatting?

Help please!

To solve repeated blue screening I've had to delete the existing partition
on my hard drive and reformat my XP Home operating system. However, after
restoring my backed up files (saved in advance using Windows back-up utility)
I am unable to access those files that were marked as private. I assume this
is a security measure of some sort but I am using the same User name and
Password and I still get an 'Access is denied' error when I try to open them.

I fear I've lost 5 years of photography and would appreciate advice on how
to access my restored files

Thanks in advance.
