How did they do this?

I'm clicking around looking for a movie trailer for "War of the
Worlds" (no, not on porn sites) when a string of porn pix shows up on
my screen saying somethig like "Click here to meet girls in Pensacola
who want to f*** you now."

Somehow I doubt this is really true...

I quickly closed Firefox, but obviously some spyware already knows
where I live.

But how does this site they know my hometown? Is it just by tracing
my ISP (Mediacom Cable)?

I use Firefox, Avast, Spyware Doctor, have Windows Messenger turned
off, clear my caches often, and update security software often.

TIA
Dave

It's odd: I got some with the name of the town I lived in a few
years ago (also not the place I was accessing the net from).

For a demo of one of the things that can be seen when you visit a web
site, go here:

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

It's ok. It's Steve Gibson's Shields Up site and it's perfectly safe.

If you scroll down the screen a bit, you should see your "reverse
DNS" displayed. It will have a code name embedded in it of the
name of a city. In my case, I see an abbreviation of the name of
a city near where I live. That city is the first in a series of cities
(locations) along the routing path from me to the web server.

By your IP address and the the route to it. Certain locality information can be surmised.

Go to www.dnsstuff.com.
Enter your IP address (12.215.220.165) in the "Reverse DNS Lookup"
field.
Look at the top of the result page for the city (Gulf Breeze, Florida,
in your case).

The city is just an approximation and can sometimes be very wrong. It
depends on how far the IP address can be traced and how up-to-date is
the database. If, for example, you were using dial-up while travelling
and connected via long-distance to your ISP then you could be somewhere
completely different than your ISP's POP (point of presence) that got
traced. Even if you use cable broadband, the geolocation data can be
way off. A lookup on my IP address shows Ann Arbor, Michigan but that
is a couple *states* away from me.

If you want more information on the geolocation data, click on the
"Location" link in the above results page.

BINGO! There's the answer!

I was afraid something had gotten into my system and read my home
address somewhere, but it seems that's prolly not the case.

Thanks Vanguard and everyone who helped.

Now, does anyone know if those chicks REALLY want me?
I'm a 52 year old bald headed sex god...

That's interesting, it told me my location is United Kingdom and that's
it, mind you I'm behind a router so that was the public ip.
Wish I had as much knowledge as these computers <vbg>

If you read it on the Internet than must be true.
