How can you tell if a worm is on your system?

Just received a E=MAIL which i think has put a worm in my mother board
As I WAS READING the e mail it said down load worm i switched it off straight away

Get a virus scanner then install and run it. It is better to read email as
plain text and *not* to open any attachments except under double checked
situations.

Thanks Steve ran the virus checker ....no virus on system ...is there
a worm checker ?
