I am trying to calculate the sum of three fields in a form saved as a
template. However it is not a normal table. It is not simply rows and
columns, there are columns within columns and such. I am using word on XP
Professional.

"In a form" as in the things you want to calculate are in form fields?

If not, then your only chance is to bookmark each individual entry, then use
a formula field REFfing the bookmark names. But this will be tricky for data
entry (the bookmarks will tend to get lost).
