How can we view DOS file names in XP?

Pre-XP it was possible to view a file's properties and see (as an option in
file settings) it's true DOS name. I can't find any option in Windows
Explorer's Folder Options or Choose Details...; the Command Prompt displays
directories and files with their long names, making it difficult to change
directories and find files. Is it still possible to view files with their
native names?

WinXP is not built upon MS-DOS, so what you're seeing *are* the
"native" names.

Google "pathc400" and download "Ninotech Path Copy 4". After you install
and configure it, it will give you a right-click (context) menu in Windows
Explorer, one of the options of which is to copy a file's 8.3 DOS name to
the clipboard. You then paste it where-ever you need it, such as a parameter
on a command line.

From a command prompt:
dir /x
