How can tell what file structure I have, NTFS or Fat32?

Greg Stevens

Yesterday I installed XP on a new computer that came
ready to roll with WinME on it. Along the way I was
asked something about overwriting Fat32, partitions or
some such, but did not pay that much attention.

It's working fine so far, but in later taking the tour
and reading up on NTFS & how it is so much better than
Fat32 or Fat, I now wonder how I set up my machine.

Is there somewhere I can go within XP where I can see if
I am set up one way or the other? I want NTFS if I don't
have it.

Thanks,

gs.

Sure

In Explorer, navigate to My Computer and right-click on Local Disk (C:).
Select properties and look for "File system:" on the general tab.

If you are using FAT, you can go to the command line and run:

convert c: /fs:ntfs

When you next reboot, the filesystem will be converted. Of course, if you
are multibooting with Windows ME (don't know why you'd want to), you won't
be able to do this. Although I have never seen this procedure fail, you
should always take a backup of any data that you could not face losing.

Double-click My Computer, right-click on the hard drive and select
"Properties." The file system will be displayed.
