In scientific publications or maths books, there is usually an equation
number on the right side of the equation (tab right and number). I am not
able to do this in the new word can anyone help?

Why not -- what happens?

The usual approach is to use a borderless 1x2-table, with the number on
the right. That way, you can even use Word's caption mechanism when the
cursor is in the right cell, if you want).
