How can I switch Drive Letters?

J

Jared

This is the situation...my HD went back and I got a new
one under warranty. I have 10 gig of work files I needed
to transfer to the new HD. I set the bad one to slave,
set new one to master and did a install of XP Pro on the
new drive. Started up computer and now the new HD is
drive F and the old bad one is drive C. Is there any way
to switch these letters? What will happen when I format
and take out the old HD, drive C? Thanks

Hi Jared,

You can't switch the drive letter assigned to the system partition. Period.
The only way to do it is to start all over again (this time with the other
drive removed). Unless the system is relying on the old drive as a boot
drive, there should be no issues with removing it.

Hi Jared!
You cannot change the drive letter of the system volume or boot volume.

pay attention to reboots

- Change Disk Drive Letters

First you must remember that you CANNOT change the letter for the

boot drive if it contains the PAGEFILE.SYS (swap file) and/or HIBERFILE.SYS(hibernate file).

To move pagefile.sys use Control Panel | System | Advanced tab | Settings

under Performance | Advanced tab again | Virtual Memory and CHANGE

button. set the drive you want to move FROM to NO Paging File and click on SET.

set the drive you want to move TO and click SET.

To turn off page file, same as above, but select No Paging file and then clickthe SET button

To disable hiberfile.sys use Control Panel | Power Options Hibernate tab.

THEN REBOOT and Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Disk

Management under Storage, then RIGHT click on the drive letter to change

and select the Change Letter option.

THEN following the first procedure set the PAGEFILE.SYS back to the

drive it was on originally.

XP automatically adjusts the registry for the drive letter changes.
