How can I store data as a negative number in Access?

I need to store longitude as a negative number in Access 2002. I know how to
display it as a negative number, but the GIS database I am linking to does
not recognize it as a negative number.

My data type is number, field size is decimal, 5 digits to the side of the
decimal, input mask \-00.00000.
