How can I stop saving file in current name and in prior version?

I've saved a new version of a file, but it still seems to update a prior
version when I save (auto backup not on). When I open the file it opens two
copies the current named version and the prior. Any ideas appreciated?

Which version of Word?

When you use the term "version" in your question, do you mean specifically the
feature File/Versions, or are you using it generically?

If you don't mean the feature, can you elaborate a bit on how you "saved a new
version of a file"?

There are two files in a directory, file name on one is v5 the other is v4
(not word version control). The file is not set up for "always backup"; any
changes to the v5 are also reflected in v4. V4 file size is larger than v5,
and If the v5 file is moved into a different directory (w/out v4) then word
gives an error. I inherited this file, it use the Table of Contents function
and it also had Frames when I first opened it. I'm not familiar with either
function in Word, so I don't know if that's part of the problem.

Perhaps the documents contain IncludeText fields? Try pressing Alt+F9 to see
whether any text becomes a field code.
