How can I spellcheck a doc without spellchecking its comments?

I'm using Word 2003. I always run the spellchecker on documents with
comments, and at the end, I'm always checking the comments, which I never
have to do. I think this is new in Word 2003. Anyway, I don't want to check
the comments. Is there some way to switch checking off for the comments?
Thanks,
Linus

Sounds like it should be the answer, but when I try this, it doesn't really
work. Best I can tell, my comments aren't in the "Comment Text" text style at
all. They're in the "Normal" style. ? But let me tinker with some more, maybe
I'm missing something....

Comment text shouldn't use any other style than Comment Text, unless
you've changed that. If you are not seeing the correct style in the
Styles and Formatting pane, it could be that it just isn't displayed;
Word's idea of which styles should and shouldn't display in the
various categories remains a mystery (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/sfpane/StylesAndFormattingPane.html).

Another thing to consider: Are you viewing the comment text in
balloons? Then you may want to try setting the property for the
Balloon Text style too.

If you need assistance with the Modify Style dialog box, see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/ModifyAStyle.html.

Stefan,
Thanks, those are all helpful pointers in useful directions. I make some
progress when I start out with a clean document and try to make these
adjustments. There are various quirks, though, and it all seems more
complicated than I'd like. My demands are pretty high, because I use Word
every day for translating natural language -- the docs always contain at
least two languages. So there's also this complicating factor involving the
automatic language detection, which certainly doesn't work (be nice to turn
that off completely, the developers just overreached there)... The Styles
info isn't presented as plainly as I'd like, but either I'll figure it out
using your advice, or I'll come up with a simpler solution. In practice, I
just kill the spellchecker when it hits the comments, because that always
comes last. And that's certainly not difficult...
Thanks,
Linus

Turn off the auto-detection of language (in Tools | Language | Set
Language). Make sure that you use different styles for the different
languages, and that the language is correctly set for those styles.
