My world flightsim app has around 3 terabytes of image data, split up into
files of around 2 megabytes. the files are grouped in 10X10 degree area
folders each with 50,000-100,000 files. This works fine for the data
processing tools and image generator, but kills explorer stone dead - it can
take 3 minutes or more to open a folder. I am using cygwin right now to
manage the files ( when i need to copy/move/delete them etc. )

"3 terabytes"? Speed it up? Purchase an external harddrive and transfer
about 2 1/2 terabytes to it, that should speed it up. Also, how are you
viewing the files in Explorer? Using Details? For thumbnails and icons will
slow it down tremendously. Explorer has limitations, this may help some.
Folders View (increase from 400 to 8000)
