how can I see the cursor's position in a line in numbers?

In Word 2000 I could see a number in the bottom left corner that tells me how
many characters a line contains. As a translator, this is a useful tool when
you don't want a line to exceed 37 characters (including spaces). Where do I
find this tool in Word 2007?
Example:
I must go to the shop.
After the full stop the number in the corner would be 22.

Right-click the status bar at the bottom of the window. There's a long
list of things that it can show, and you can choose which ones you
want.
