How can I restore the plus sign in front of distribution groups

Before we upgraded our software, distribution groups in Outlook had a + (plus
sign) in front of them to allow you to expand the group to see who was in it
and delete individuals without altering the list permanently. The plus sign
is gone, and I can't expand the group and remove individuals without
permanently changing the distribution list. Help!!!
