How can I put 1 border around a paragraph that includes numbering

When I highlight the paragraph that includes numbering (sort of like a how-to
paragraph) and then place it in one border, Word 2007 creates two borders:
one for the top text and one for the numbering text. How can tell it to make
just one box.

Are you blocking ALL of the text that you want to be inside the border before
applying the border? If you are, Word should put just one border around
both. At least, that's how it works for me.

Yes. I had no problems with it in Word 2003, but in Word 2007 I can't get it
to work.

Are you selecting multiple paragraphs? If so, you may have a horizontal
border. In the Borders and Shading dialog box, on the Borders tab, you can
clear it by clicking the button in the middle (to the left of the preview
picture).

This is what I get: (But try to imagine that I hit enter after store:, then
use automatic numbering for the listed items. Try to imagine that there are
vertical lines completing the boxes and that the bottom box is indented
further to the right than the top box because of the indented numbers.)
I would like all of this text to be in just one box.

Your first paragraph has different indents from the numbered items. There is
no practical way to do this with a paragraph border. You'll have to use a
table cell, frame, or text box to get a border around all the text.
