How can I prevent proliferation of styles?

I have always used styles extensively for formatting the very large Word
documents that I write. But in Word 2003 I am being frustrated by the
creation of an additional style every time I make a local formatting change.
The style list becomes unwieldy and too big to search conveniently. Has
anyone found a satisfactory way to live with this new inovation?

These are not styles but "formatting." Clear the check box for "Keep track
of formatting" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.
