How can I prevent office from scanning documents when i open them?

In order for me to open a word file, I have to open up word then the file.
If I go directly to the file, the word document starts to run a continous
virus scan that never stops. How can I prevent this from happening? It is
really frustrating.

If you're using Norton AntiVirus, disable its Office Plug-in. If some other
AV program, there will be another way to disable virus scanning in Word.
