How can I open a .pst file in Outlook 2007?

I have stored a lot of mail in several "Personal Folders Files" (.pst)
files, with the result, it seems, that they are irretrievable!
Surely, this cannot be right?

I open Outlook. I click on File/Open/Outlook Data File ...

The Outlook Data File window opens showing me my list of .pst files.
I select the file I want to open.

I then get a new folder in my Navigation Pane entitled "Personal
Folders". This folder contains a Deleted Items folder and a Search
folder, and nothing else.

Can anyone explain why this is happening?

Many thanks!

Try to open another one. When you right click on the root of the folderset
and choose Properties-> Folder Size does it indicate that it holds more
folders and contains items?
