How can I make Windows Messenger go away.

John

My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition (SP)

Windows Messenger loads on startup, something it did not do before
yesterday's Windows update session. I have always used Startup Cop to
configure what I want to load on startup. But now, even though I disable it
on startup, it shows up anyway. I also tried disabling it using the Systems
Configuration Utility, but it loads anyway---along with the annoying
message, something to the effect that I am now starting up in diagnostic
mode. I have never used or configured Windows Messenger and wish it was not
on the computer.

Any suggestions on what I can do to stop it from loading. I can right click
on its icon in the systems tray and close it, but as soon as I open up
Outlook Express it shows up again. Even though it has an X on the icon and
shows that I am not logged on, it caused problems when I am doing on line
gaming. Apparently it does some sort of polling and causes glitches in
gaming, something that did not happen when I was able to stop it from
loading on startup.

Thanks

Thanks again
