I have a long list of choices for a form, so I created a drop-down box. I
inserted it in the form and then locked it. The drop down box works great,
but you can't type in the form. How do I make a drop-down box work in a form
you can type in? Can I lock just the drop-down box? If so, how?

You cannot just lock the drop-down. You can use an AutoTextList field,
though, if it suits your purposes.

If your choices need to be repeated, you may want to also look at

Charles has offered a suggestion that may work if you have just the one list
in your form. But if you want to make a protected form, then you insert text
form fields where you want people to be able to type freely. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm and especially
the forms tutorials by Dian Chapman that this article links to.
