I pressed something with the ALT or CTRL key by accident and cannot get those
line spacers off...looks like a backward "P" but with 2 vertical
lines...HELP!! It's driving me nuts!
Thanks so much!

Ctrl + Shift + * (asterisk). You turned on "Formatting marks" (Show/Hide on
your toolbar next to your Zoom level--you can click that icon). Alternately:
Tools>Options, on the View tab under Formatting marks unckeck All.

Just to be picky for a minute, as this is a very common mistake ...

The shortcut is Ctrl+*, not Ctrl+Shift +anything. If the asterisk character
on a particular keyboard needs a shift to get it then, yes, you will have to
press Shift but it is not inherently part of the shortcut key combination.

Precisely, and this is why it is better stated as Ctrl+* rather than
Ctrl+Shift+8, as the latter is applicable only on U.S. keyboards.
