How can I delete an embedded checkmark box?

I have tried the usual methods and nothing seems to work. The box will not
highlight and I cannot seem to delete it by normal methods. How can I delete
this box?
 
This may or may not work but it's something to try.

Right click any toolbar
Select Contol Toolbox
Click on the top left icon (looks like a blueish triangle)
Click on the offending checkbox
Hit the Delete key
Click on the top left icon again
Close the Control Toolbox toolbar
