How can I copy a chart - I get a circle with a line?

when I try to copy my chart into a PPT slide, I get a circle with a line in
it - and I can't copy. It's like I have read only access but I don't
remember doing anything funky...help??!!

From XL:
Select your chart (make sure its the chart, not a series/legend or plot area)
Copy.

In PowerPoint:
Go to Edit - Paste Special.
Select a picture format (probably PNG format, or metafile).
