How can I change the default reminder time in Calendar?

I tried resetting the default time in TOOLS->OPTIONS->CALENDAR, but it
doesn't seem to have any effect on the reminder time in appointments (stays
at 15 minutes). I've rebooted a couple of times and still no change. What am
I doing wrong?
 
that only applies to new appointments and only the ones using specific
times - all day appointments are 18 hour reminders by default.
 
those are the appointments (new and with specific times) that I want to set
the default times on.
