How can I back up a XP-Home disk from an XP-Pro???

B

Bo Berglund

I have a home network consisting of one W2000 server (workgroup mode),
one XP-Pro SP2 machine (mine) and an XP-Home PC for my wife.
Previously she had an NT4 Workstation.
I have an HP DAT backup tape recorder on my XP-Home PC and I run
nightly backups on that using BackupExec.
Before she got the new PC all was fine, I could back up her PC via the
network through the C$ admin share.

But now no matter what I do I cannot access her PC via the network at
all and the C$ share is not visible at all either....

What can I do to set up my backup system again? After all the XP PC is
an NT class machine and all of her hard disk is NTFS so there are
permissions and all...

I think, the easiest way is:

To set the password for your account (at least one digit/letter),
AND
create the SAME user (with the rights of the administrators) with the
SAME password at your wife's computer.

If you don't want to type this password every time you switch on your
computer, and force your wife to select the first user every time she
switches on her one -- you can deny to logon locally yourself at your
wife's computer (in Local Policies), and set Autologin (say, with help
of TweakUI for WinXp) at your computer. Or set Autologin at the both.

Does not work...
I *have* set up the same users and passwords on both PC:s and I have
enabled the login on the XP-Home as well.
My account is belonging to the administrator group on both PC:s.

But the main problem is that XP-Home seems not to be able to share the
disk root as C$ or for that matter to share anything at all except My
Documents.

No matter how I try to connect to a share I create on XP-Home as
myself to gain the proper permissions it pops up the login screen with
Guest preselected as user with no possibility to change it to the
proper admin account name....

This is not an issue, we never use autologin in the first place.
Remember that the old PC now replaced was a Windows NT4 machine, it is
many years since we threw out the Win95-98-ME class machines.

The problem seems to be that even though NTFS is used as file system
permissions are not used on sheres in XP-Home. And I cannot switch off
"Simple File Sharing" in home. :-(

Well, Bo, I understood your point. Yes, XP Home has many uncomfortable
limitations when in LAN. But:

(1) See if
"HOW TO Remove Administrative Shares in Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318751
helps in the opposite direction in your case.

(2a) Use the CACLS utility (run it in CMD window; as usual, run it with
the switch /? first -- to get a help),
or
(2b) Restart WinXP Home in Safe Mode using Administrator account. Then
the tab 'Security' appears in the folder options -- like if "Simple File
Sharing" is unchecked in WinXP Pro..
