How can I avoid login screen in Windows XP?

I am running Windows XP Home Edition.

I am the administrator, and there are no other users accounts.

I am accustomed to booting up my computer and immediately seeing my
desktop, without having to go through a login screen.

However, yesterday, after installing a new program (which I suspect is
ill-behaved), I find that every time I boot up (or even after my
screen saver goes on), I am presented with a login screen which asks
me to click on my user name. I find this annoying.

Can anyone tell me how I can revert to my earlier configuration, in
which I am automatically logged in and go directly to my desktop,
without being presented with a login screen? I have looked through
Control Panel / User Accounts, but I don't see anything there that
specifically addresses this question.

Incidentally, I don't think I have ever set a password for my login
name.

Most of what you want to do/are doing is a 'bad idea', however, I think if
you get TweakUI from Microsoft, you will get the options you want (like your
autologon, etc.)

One of the recent updates adds an ASP Limited account. Go to users in
control panel and remove it. You should only have your regular account and
Guest, which is turned off.

Thanks for your response.

I have now cleared up the problem through a series of steps which I'm
not sure I could reconstruct, but which involved my deleting a
password for my login name that I had earlier entered (erroneously, I
believe).

I now note that, as a byproduct of whatever I did that resolved the
problem, the ASP Limited account that was formerly listed as a user is
gone. So I suspect that if I had removed that account initially, as
you suggest, that might have resolved my problem as well.

The big problem was even though the ASP account is listed in Users, it is
hidden from the Welcome Screen. Hence, not being able to see it but it
still tripping up the auto-logon.

I suppose you could also use Tweak UI to autologon a particular user.

You probably installed the .NET framework update - that generates an
extra user account for ASPNET. Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys
from (if you have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Logon page, uncheck 'Show ASPNET on Welcome screen'

You can also manually edit the registry if you like:

(works with xp too)

hope this helps,
