How can I animate a free-hand line (scribble) in a slideshow?

I need to show a route taken by the British army on a map for a history
presentation. I can draw a line showing the route, but I don't want it to
appear all at once - it should show the progress. I tried using the "wipe"
animation, but the line curves back and forth so parts of it "wipe" in at the
wrong time. Is there a way to have the line appear the way I drew it, or to
make a custom motion path and show the path behind it?

If you want to have proper tracing effect, you will need to break up your
line into different parts, then add the wipe effect onto these lines. Adding
a custom motion path which will line out the route is an easier way to
resolve this.

Is there a way to make the custom motion path leave a visible "trail" that
will remain on the slide to show the path?
