the wording it will not allow me. I think the document may be protected but
am unable to find out how to unprotect the document. Thanks

If the document is protected then you must unprotect it before you can edit
it - and from the behaviour you have described, it does sound like the
document is protected.

The process for unprotecting a document varies depending on the version of
Word you are using and the type of protection that has been applied. For
example, if a document has been "forms" protected in Word 2003, click "Tools
| Unprotect document". However, please note that if the document has been
protected using a password, you will be prompted for this password before the
protection will be removed. If you do not have the password, there is no
method available within Word for removing the protection.

Actually with documents protected for forms, that's not strictly true -
especially with Word 2003 - and it's not that difficult with Word 2007. See

Actually this is incorrect. If a document has been protected by forms, I.e.
using Tools/Protect Document, the password can be easily stripped by
creating a new document and inserting the contents of the protected document
using Insert/File.

Thanks so much Beth! This Insert/File tip was a HUGE help! We couldn't
remember a password and this did the trick.
