how can i add numbers from non-aligned rows and cells in excel?

i have an excel document that has multiple categories and a corresponding
number for all of the counties in New York. I want to add up all the county
numbers from one category ?
 
I doubt if you'll get many replies to such a scant description.

Post some examples of your data - how it is laid out and how you want
the results to appear etc.
