I have recently bought a second-hand laptop machine with windows XP Pro SP2
and patched up-to-date. My problem is that when I try to use the "hotplug"
feature to remove some USB plugged in item such as a memory stick, I get a
program error at displacement 48C4 in Hotplug.dll. The version of that is
5.1.2600.2180. Any help much appreciated.

I would never ever run someone else's misconfigured installation enriched
with viruses, worms, trojans and spyware. Reinstall Windows from scratch
if not already done.

Then consider this:

Good luck :)

Nor would I! I have installed AVG antivirus and it runs quite
happily on its daily scan....and updates itself daily OK. I have also run
Adaware with nothin susicios appearing! My belief is that some registry
setting is the cause of the problem.

So *did* you reinstall Windows from scratch?

LOL! When installed with administrative privileges, malware can easily
bypass any anti-virus.
My belief is that some registry setting is the cause of the problem.

That's not very likely after reinstalling Windows on a freshly formatted
drive, is it.
