Deborah

I can not sign onto my hotmail, lycos or yahoo email
accounts while in regular mode on my computer. This
has been going on two weeks. Today I put my computer
in safe mode and was able to sign into these accounts
with no problem.
Also while in regular mode I could fill out this form
but it would not submit. I tried to contact someone
to get some help but could not get anywhere in regular
mode.
I have a Dell Dimension 4100, Windows XP, Intel Celeron
processor, 996 MHz and 512 MB of RAM. I noticed this
happened when I changed to Bellsouth DSL Lite. (Formerly
had Cable connection thru cable company)

I forgot to add that I can not do Windows Update in
regular mode either. When I try to sign onto hotmail
and other accounts it takes me to "Page can not be
displayed"
Thank you for any assistance that you can give me.

Did you do a Self-Install of the DSL ?
Can you browse to other web sites without any problems.
What type of error you do receive when you try to login to
these services. You are running a current Anti-Virus & have
done all the customary Spyware removal tools ?
You might need to delete all the Cookies from your IE cache.
Just need a little more information, to help resolve it.

It goes to "Page can not be displayed". So far I don't
have any problems going to any of the web pages. It is
just when I try to sign on to my email accounts or to
my bank account, when I try to post a message it just
puts me on wait until I close the window. I have McAfee
AntiVirus. Have IE 6.0
Yes I installed the DSL from a CD that bellsouth sent me.
Followed instructions exactly. After I could not get into
email, I called bellsouth and the Customer Service person
tried every avenue that they knew to try and correct the
problem.
I have done system restore about 5 or 6 times trying
different dates. Cleaned Cache, did Disc Defrag, Disc
Cleanup, Cleared history, deleted temp internet files.
I think I have tried everything but the right think.
I also contacted Dell and they wanted me to run Diagnostic
on the computer but that will not work either. They had me
to try and download the Diagnostic from the internet but
that errored out also.
Most errors I get is Page Can Not Be Displayed.
If I can answer anymore questions that I have not answered
so far, I will be glad to answer them to get this resolved.
Oh I have a Ad-Block on my web page (I have to turn it off
for certain sites like to play games).
I also have a spyware thing on my computer that I had
downloaded when I was having previously. It may be Ad-
Adware. It scan your computer for any ad sites that "spy"
on computer.

There are several things that need to be checked for this.

First, There is a file in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc
called "Hosts". It translates URL's to their actual IP address.
For most common XP installs it should only have one entry.
LocalHost 127.0.0.1
You need to edit yours and examine the contents. The top
section are comments, denoted by the # character and those
you can ignore. Any other lines without the # beyond the
LocalHost you should remove.

Next, you need to check the Zone Settings for Internet
Explorer. Open IE, Click Tools, Internet Options, Security.
You'll see four Zones, you need to click on each one, it
will turn blue for Highlighted/Selected. Look below and
see if the setting grayed out is Default or Custom. If any
are at "Custom", click the Default button. In other words
all 4 should be at Default value. Finally, before leaving
Security, Highlight Trusted zone and click the Sites button.
This section should be empty. When you put a site in this,
it uses a "Low" security setting.

Next click on the Privacy Tab. Click Advanced. Place a
check in "Override automatic Cookie Handling". Then click
Accept for First Party Cookies and click Block for Third
Party Cookies. Click Ok, Ok,

Close IE and Reboot.

Now try one of your email sites, but beforehand Right Click
the McAfee icon and select "Disable", just to eliminate it
as part of your problem (Yes, I'm not a fan of McAfee
products). If you gain access, re-enable McAfee and see
if it still continues to work.

Please post back your results, as these are only the 1st steps
in getting it to work for you.

I did all the steps you suggested and it still would not
work even with McAfee turned off.
I am not real happy with McAfee either. I used to have
Norton but when I installed Windows XP I could not get it
to work. (I had just bought a new CD for Norton right
before that) I forgot what errors I got when I tried to
get it running but that is a whole new set of problems.

I went to the "Hosts" (not sure if I did it right) but I
only saw the local host 127.0.0.1 - I think I could open
it some other way but was not sure how. Might need to give
the steps to doing this. I opened it with wordpad because
it would not open otherwise. I thought there was a place
where you just click a plus sign and it would open.
I double clicked on my computer, double clicked on C
drive, Windows, then System 32 then the etc folder. When I
found "Hosts" I tried to double click on it to open but it
asked me if I wanted to go to web or open it with
something else so I chose wordpad. (don't laugh)
What is a good antiVirus program?

WordPad is fine. Windows doesn't natively know what to
do with a file without an extension. That's how it knows
which program to open the file with.

Sorry that didn't get you back on line, but there are a number
of things you have to check first. If I remember correctly you
said that access to these email accounts works in safe mode.
That means that something is running during a normal boot
that is preventing access. If you made the changes to Cookies
and Zones, then something is blocking these sites. I would
uninstall your Ad-blocking program and run a program called
BHO Demon. It shows what Browser Helper applications are
loaded for IE. You can download it here.
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
It should show Helper apps for Adobe Reader, your anti-virus
and perhaps Spybot, if you have it installed. In fact you should
actually download, update and run the following:
AdAware
http://www.download.com/3001-8022-10214379.html
CWShredder
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe
SpyBot
http://www.download.com/redir?pid=1...5&ontId=8022&destUrl=/3001-8022-10289035.html
HiJackThis
http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

AdAware and SpyBot depend on definitions, just like Anti-Virus
CWShredder & HiJackThis have facilities to check for an updated
version of themselves.

Run these tools and run BHO to see what Helpers are installed.

Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar, click on GO, then
copy/paste the results into your reply:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

Check your system for "hijackware":

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.winfavorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup > More options > Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
