Hotmail Problem under MS Outlook 2002 - Attempts to Access Address Book

I had some problems, apparently shared by others, with accessing a Hotmail account via IE 6. One solution was to access the Hotmail account via MS Outlook under my cable-based ISP (cogeco.ca)

Since swithching access to a Hotmail account from the Internet directly to via my cable-based ISP, I have been faced with a pop-up window indicating unautherized access to my Address Book contents

On activating the Inbox from MS Hotmail under MS Outlook under the Cogeco cable connection, this pop-up window appears. On selecting the “NO†option, MS Outlook becomes inactive requiring a CTL-ALT-DEL action to terminate the Non-responsive†program

On reactivating MS Outlook, access to the inbox is granted without the offending pop-up window.

This situation appears to occur only when there is an unread message in the Inbox. Neither Norton’s Anti-Virus (up-yo-date) nor MacAfee’s SpamKiller programs appear to detect any virus of spam associated with this problem

I am operating Win XP Home, IE 6, with Norton's Anti-virus,Norton's Intenet Security, and McAfee's SpamKiller programs

Any help in alleviating this problem would be greatly appreciated

Hi Bruce,

I had a similar problem to yours. I resolved it by installing SpyBot
(http://security.kolla.de/) and removing any rogue programs that it
found. It seemed that in my case that there was some VBScript code
trying to access my Outlook. Hope this helps!

Hi David:

Thank you for your input. I did not use Spybot, because I had previously
checked for Trojan Horse / Malware programs and uncovered none. Rrather I
updated my Zone Alarm Pro 5 program. There had, obviously, been some
deleterious interaction between ZA Pro 5 and IE6/Hotmail (indeed probably
MS-related servers becasue I had continuing problems trying to access any
MS-related web site). My interim solution of disabling ZA pro 5 while
accessing MS-related sites is no longer necessary - except that the response
time to complete access is often so long that I can only speed up the process
by disabling ZA Pro 5 (updated).
I trust that this explanation may assist any other users having experienced
problems similar to ours.

Appreciatively,

Bruce
