Hotmail and winmail.dat

This is a re-occuring problem. Why do attachments that are
sent as normal Word and Excel files produce themselves as
winmail.dat files and unreadable. An attachment is an
attachment and should not be messed with. Some people have
legitimate reasons to send these types of files and unless
I am doing something wrong or have a filter not set right
then it should be the same attachment received as was sent.

Nevermind, I think I know the answer.

Most likely Sender was using Outlook's RTF. Ask them to send to you only
using Plain Text.

Hi,

I'm having similar problems. Been sending my CV as a doc attachment and people receiving are saying they are coming through as a dat document. I have tried attaching as PDF and same thing.

Please can someone explain how to sort this in layman terms.
