Hotbar removal?

Hi,
Please can someone offer me a little assistance?
I have been running IE 6 for some time but have recently been plagued by
numerous pop-ups and ads - but everything seems to have started since the
HOTBAR appeared on the top toll bar of my IE explorer window.

Is this something that I can safely remove? - if so, I really would
appreciate some help or suggestions on how best to go about it.( I know that
I can right click on it and get rid of it for that session - but I would
like to do something a bit more permanent)
