When I went to remove some old programs using the
add/remove programs utility I noticed a whole bunch
of :"windows XP Hotfix KB*******. Can or should I
remove them, or just let things stay as they are.

Leave them, these are the fixes you get from Windows Update. they keep your
system protected and fix known problem with Windows XP.

You can remove them, but you should not. The hotfixes were
installed for a reason, fixing bugs or security issues in
Windows, and removing them puts back the bugs or security
exposure.

Hi,

Removing them would uninstall the associated security update. If you have no
intention of uninstalling an update, then follow these steps to remove the
add & remove entries:

1) Set folder options/view to see hidden and system folders.

2) Open Windows Explorer to the C:\Windows folder, locate the
$NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ folders (usually in blue as they are compressed) and
delete them. These files are only used to uninstall a hotfix and are safe to
delete.

3) Go to the Control Panel/Add & Remove, select one of the deleted hotfix
files and click on chnage/remove. You will get an error message, then an
option to remove it from the list.
