I am trying to access the HOSTS file at:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc I get a prompt asking me
if I want to open from a list or use the web. If I open
from the list using Notepad or Wordpad all I get is a
sample file. I need the "real" file. If I try to use the
web I get a message saying I am not authorized to open
the windows.shell.com page.
I am having trouble getting to a particular url and was
told to check my HOSTS file, but I can't get to it. The
problem url is www.myfamily.com (66.43.25.130). Just that
site, no others. I can get to it with my computer at work.
So far I have spent 19 hours with HP online support to no
avail. I have done system recovery twice and reinstalled
IE6 three times.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Are you saying when you go to Windows
Explorer "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc" you get that
message?

The file you are getting IS the hosts file. By default, if you haven't
modified it and you haven't run any programs to modify it (some security
packages do) all that is there are the sample comments and the 127.0.0.1
localhost entry. As for the myfamily problem, can you ping (start > run >
"ping 66.43.25.130") the site? Can you get into it if you enter the IP
numerically into IE?

The fact that it says "sample" is irrelevant just edit it.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

I ran the ping test and got:
Request timed out (4times)
ping statistics packets sent 4 recieved 0 lost 4

Could not access by 66.43.25.130 in address bar

I am connected to Laughlin Wireless through microsoft
wireless usb adaptor mn-510

if you sent an email to myfamily.com, I won't be able to
see it. I can't access that site. Try
(e-mail address removed)

The website has a firewall so ping won't return anything.

You might also take a look at the Restricted Sites list on the Security tab
of Internet Options (Tools> Internet Options) if you are running some sort
of Spyware prevention software. They (Spyware prevention utilities) add
sites to this list.

Another thought is to try a different Browser. Mozilla is good. If you want
to try something really tiny just to see if you can get there with something
else try the Off by One browser.

The normal hosts file contains just that sample - description and one
line for
127.0.0.0 localhost

Anything else would be stuff added - by you or quite possibly these days
by malware. And you add items using Notepad in that form
