Hello. I have an XP Pro machine and I have connected it to my newest machine
which is a 09SE machine. Both machines connect to a router which is
connected to the RoadRunner Cable Modem. After I run the Network Setup
Wizard on the host PC (the XP Pro machine), reboot, click
start->programs->My Network Places, it doesn't show the PC that I just ran
the Network Setup Wizard on. It does see the other PC (the 98SE machine
after I ran the Networking Setup Wizard on that PC) and I can run music
files from it from the folders that I designated for File Sharing. I have
not disabled the NortonAntivirus or the Firewall. Could this be the problem.
I don't know how to disable the Firewall. Thanks in advance for any help on
this. Jim.

If you have Windows XP in the original version or the Service Pack 1
version, disable the Internet Connection Firewall on the local area
network connection's Properties | Advanced. By design, it blocks
access to the computer on the local area network.

If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, make sure that only one
firewall is active. If you have Norton's firewall, disable XP's
built-in Windows Firewall and configure Norton's firewall to allow
access on the local area network. I'm sorry, but I can't tell you how
to configure Norton's firewall.

If you don't have Norton's firewall, configure the Windows Firewall to
allow exceptions for file and printer sharing on the local area
network.

This web page shows how to configure the Windows Firewall:

Thank you Carey. I have printed out all of the instructions at this website.
Maybe I can get it all to work soon. Jim.

Thanks Steve. I have printed out all of the "Understanding Windows Firewall"
and I am sure I will learn a lot from it. Jim.

I have done everything that is included in all these steps BUT "My Network
Places" still only show the 98SE machine, NOT the XP Pro machine as being in
the network. From the 98SE machine the "Network Neighborhood" lists only the
98SE PC on the network but it still does not list the XP Pro machine as
being on the network. I am at a loss to know what to do and WinXP Pro says
setting up a network is easier than ever. I am finding it so easy that I am
unable to setup the network at all and I have been working on it for over 20
hours now. Very dissapointed. Jim.

Hello. I had a Technician from the Local Computer Club come out and he
advised me that since the two hard drives on the XP Pro machine were
formatted NTFS that 98SE could not read those NTFS formatted drives. I
updated the 98SE machine to XP and the LAN works just fine now. Is it true
that 98SE cannot read NTFS formatted drives? Is upgrading to XP what really
fixed it? TIA, Jim.

Yes and No. It is true that if you were dual booting with Win98 (file
system FAT32) and XP (file system NTFS), while you were booted into
Win98 you wouldn't be able to see the XP partition and when booted into
XP, you would be able to see Win98's partition. However, this has
nothing to do with file sharing over a network. Mixed operating system
machines can see and access shares. My own network has Win95, Win98,
Win2k, WinXP, and Linux. All machines can exchange files.
