Horrible PC slowdown need help.

Hi,
I think my system may be infected with either a virus or some kind of
spyware, but a scan with the latest defs doesn't reveal anything. My system
acts extrememly sluggish. This happened when my browser tried to download
something from some site that I was redirected to. It hung the browser and I
had to end task on it, and since then no matter what I do in Windows, it
takes a very long time, even just clicking a button. Something seems to be
chewing up all my CPU time but I can't find out what it is. How can I even
begin to find out if I'm infected? I've used multiple spyware detection
programs but they don't find anything. When the program name appears at the
bottom of the taskbar, it scrolls VERY slowly, and everything in general is
sluggish. Instead of a 3.6G system it acts like a 486. Any help is great
thanks!!
