I've got a customer's PC which needed a repair install after changing the
motherboard. Setup is asking for an upgrade key, but the PC is an E-Machine
with a valid OEM COA.

Any ideas? Thanks!

You need to use the customer's original eMachines recovery cds.
Someone has done a repair install with an upgrade cd at some point in the
past.

In addition, I've never heard of a Windows OS asking for a specific
type of CD key before. My installers have always just asked for a 25
character alphanumeric string, and complained if the key was not valid
(giving no reason why the key would not be valid).

That's what I was thinking, but this particular customer is pretty
unlikely to have done that. Also, this isn't the first time i've come
across this. The only other thing we've thought of is that there may
be a problem repairing a non-SP2 version with an SP2 disk?
