Hi,

If this is the wrong place to post, pls let me know and I'll
set a fup. For now this is only being posted here but I'd
like the most relevant group if I guessed wrong.

Hi

I'm subscribed to a few of the Microsoft newgroups (XP
basic, new, IE, OE, etc). Mostly I lurk soaking up
information, and I do NOT have a functional email address in
my properties; I use (e-mail address removed).

Question:
Is there any logical reason when I post a response to the
group, NOT a Reply Sender or Reply All, that it would
generate an "Undelivered Mail Returned to Customer" message?
My messages DO show up promptly on the groups, as expected,
but I get the returned mail message claiming I addressed it
to the (usually fictitious) poster of the message I
responded to, and with that post's correct Subject?
The headers are all legit, and do come from my own ISP.
It doesn't happen every time, but it also doesn't happen
with any specific user; it seems to be random, though I
haven't created enough group traffic to be sure of very
much, yet. This happens only on XP Home - not on XP Pro
machine. LAN is down, unused, unplugged at the moment, will
remain so for the duration.

This followed, by a week or so, another "funny" with IE 6 &
XP Home (only, not Pro):
If I visit any MS site starting with "microsoft.", I get
a page display that is so ridiculously large that only about
1/4 of a letter/character can fit the screen at any one
time, with the exception of the upper right hand MS logo.
On the Pro machine, those pages are fine.
Back to the Home machine, pages that begin, however, with
"windowsupdate.microsoft, for instance, and any non MS sites
display OK on the Home.
I've been looking unsuccessfully for a long time for the
cause of that, including running updated EZ Armor AV,
Adaware, SpybotS&D, Spyware Blaster, Sygate Personal FW, run
Registry Tune-up, and inspecting log files multiple times.
No happiness found.

Now here's the kicker:
Last night, the PRO machine began acting up, but
differently. Ran all the same programs mentioned above,
except had NAV2003 instead of EZArmor (from CA). Also, on
that machine, OE has OE Quote-Fix installed.
First, it claimed it read Symantec';s opening page, but
in fact only presented a blank screen. View Source showed
nothing there. Suspecting that might be bad news, I started
looking for adware: Adaware found nothing. Spybot found an
IE start page hijack, but it hadn't been hijacked (visibly
at least). I also have a start page "lock" on IE with, I
think, one of Karen's tools and Spybot was to watch for it,
too. It indicated that my start page had been set to
doubleclick.some lone string, and although S&D thinks it
removed it, every time I rerun it, that same hijack key is
found in the Registry. But, my start page remains at
about-blank, which is correct.
Gave up there and ran the rest of the arsenal with no
results. However, I was able by then to get to Symantec, so
I grabbed the Lasser info and, after getting yesterday's
updates, and running an all-file virus scan, found nothing.
Just for grins, I searched the drive for the elements
Symantec said were parts of Lasser, to no avail.
I'd been beating Big Daddy and Little Lappy so hard I
decided to let them sleep and go back to them this morning.
Got the FC's off, and now here I am again.

Assuming you've had the patience and ability to comprehend
my concussion-loaded ramblings, I thought I'd see if anyone
here had any thoughts about it w/r to viruses, etc..
I'd like to figure out what's causing all this, but I
can't let it go much longer. I've already restored to two
dates prior to the problems showing up on each machine, with
no happy. So I plan next to reinstall IE, then try a CD
Restore, then an Upgrade Recover, and hold there for a bit
if there's still no happy. I've wanted for a long time to
repartition that drive into two parts, so worst case I'll
get to do something I want to do anyway, but ... well, that
means I gotta make sure I've got a good backup, and if that
backup contains what's causing these problems, well, uhhhh,
hmmmm!

I'll also be posting over at spamcop.net (NOT .com), besides
here. Assuming anyone expresses any interest, I'll post the
final solution here. IFF, that is, I find a solution!! <G>

Regards, & thanks for caring,

Pop
