Home Premium to 64 Bit Ultimate

Just puchased a refurbished Dell PC with Vista Home Preimum with a 64 Bit
processor. Me being naive and not enough research thought that since I was
getting a 64 bit machine that I would get a 64 bit OS.

I've learned (or think I have, a little confused) that Vista Ultimate is the
only OS with 64 bit option. Is this correct?

Also could you point me in the right direction so I can see the cost. I
assume I will have to buy a retail version since Dell doesn't offer 64 OS and
my version is OEM. When I go the Vista page and try to find the cost of
Ultimate it shows upgrade which I'm pretty sure that I can't do. I figured I
would have to do a clean install.

Any tips or suggestions let me know. Thanks,

Thomas

Windows Vista is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit on al of the major
versions (Home, Home Premium, Ultimate and Business)
The choice of 32 or 64 bit is up to you at the time you order your PC if the
manufacturer offers that choice - Dell certainly do on certain models.
Contact Dell again and see if hey will do you a swap out.

Hi Thomas,

Note that drivers for 64 bit systems are scarce. Before you go to
a 64 bit OS, make sure all your hardware has 64 bit drivers
available for it. Note also that there is a 64 bit version of
XP, though it was never very popular. I think other versions
of Vista also have 64 bit versions, but I don't know for sure.

You need to check with Dell to see if you can get the 64 bit
version free. If you bought Vista Ultimate at the store it
comes with both 32 and 64 bit media. I think I remember
hearing you could buy the 32 bit version on-line, and then
order the 64 media for a small charge.

If Dell can't help you, then you will probably have to buy
the full version. However, before you do, consider why
you want a 64 bit OS. All your current programs are 32
bits, since you did not have a 64 bit OS before, and they
will run no faster under a 64 bit OS, then they do on a
32 bit OS. As previously mentioned, you will also be
limited on what perhiperals you can buy, by the need for
them to have 64 bit drivers. Finally, there are very few]
64 bit programs available to run, even if you did have the
64 bit OS installed.

Thanks for the response Mike. As stated earlier Dell does not offer any 64
bit OS per Dell Customer Representative and it could be because of my
hardware although I wouldn't understand why. But the representative said
that right off the bat even before she knew what I had.

If Home Premium does in fact upgrade to 64 bit could you point me in a
direction where that it might list the price and/or option to do so.

Thank you for notice about 64 bit. I'm really just trying to find out what
the price is because I feel like Dell is taking advantage of this situation
and I want to know if I got screwed.

Apparently, Dell will not offer me 64 bit OS. I must puchase the full
retail version.

I also found more information of 64 OS on Microsoft web site:

Note: If your system features a 64-bit processor, you can take advantage of
its advanced design in this edition of Windows Vista. Read more:

Suggested retail price for full package product, $239.00 USD. Suggested
upgrade retail price, $159.00 USD.

So I'm assuming that is the price of the full retal version.

I'm not really in a hurry to upgrade to the 64 Bit because of the issues you
stated earlier, just trying to figure out why Dell is handling it this way.
And also to understand what my mistake was with Dell so I can be more clear
on my complaint to them.

Thanks again for your input and assitance.

I thought they only made Home/Home basic in 32 bit?
