Home Networking XP with ME machines.

Hello;

I am attempting to get a LAN home network operational. My computer has
Windows XP Pro installed on it and the other family members have Windows ME.
All machines are equipped with Netgear(or Linksys) NIC I/O cards, and are
connected, via cables to a Netgear Gateway RT314 router. The router is
connected to a DSL modem cabled to the Internet.
All machines can log on to the Internet. All machines can print to two HP
printers connected to the router via an HP Jetdirect print server cabled to
the router.. So far, so good. However, the computers do not appear to
communicate with on another using the "ping" command with the appropriate IP
address. An error appears 4 times stating "Request timed out". Where, how,
do I begin to solve this problem? I used the "ipconfig /all" command on the
XP machine. I pasted the results here, just in case it can be some help. Any
and all help greatly appreciated.

How about ipconfig /all on the ME machine?

When I perform "ipconfig /all" on the ME machine , Default Gateway, DHCP
Server and DNS Servers have the address 192.168.0.1 which is identical to
the XP machine. The address of the ME machine is 192.168.0.2. Thanks for

The problem could be an improperly configured firewall.

Hello Eric;
Thanks for responding. I neglected to mention in my first posting that all
machines on the home network were ME operating systems and all still have
ZoneAlarm firewalls. I upgraded my machine to XP Pro(disabled internal
firewall). Do I need to disable the ZoneAlarm firewalls? This action drains
the blood from my face. I am paranoid about viruses, trojans et al. Please
comment./advise. Thanks

IPAs all look OK, and DHCP is normal.

Sounds like firewall problems. On XP PCs, permanently disable ICF, since
that basic (and inflexible) firewall will inhibit F&P sharing on your LAN.
Next, temporarily disable ZoneAlarm on all PCs while you debug your net;
then reboot all PCs and see if PINGing works every which way. Once PINGing
works OK, then set up file sharing and get it working. Once file sharing
works OK, then enable ZoneAlarm and Add a Trusted Zone with an IPA range of
192.168.0.0-192.168.0.255; repeat for each PC.

If you have any firewall apps in addition to ZA, you'll need to disable
them as well. If you have any AntiVirus apps, you may need to uninstall
them while debugging your LAN; some AV apps screw up F&P sharing.
 
Hello Wayne;
I hope you browse here again because you zeroed in on my problem. I thought
I had disabled ZoneAlarm. I screwed up....badly.....sorry.....ZoneAlarm was
still active. When I disabled it properly WHAM my network came alive. I lose
some protection from clever hackers by disabling ZoneAlarm but I will find a
way to get this protection restored. Thanks again Wayne for your help. I do
appreciate it.

Your firewalls are definitely the reasons that they are
not seeing each other. But I don't know (within your type
of setup) how to configure a firewall that would allow
you to be protected from the internet and run your
network w/o interference. Someone who knows will
eventually see your post and give you the answer. It can
