Home networking 98SE and XP via crossover and sharing files and dialup internet

J

John Gordon

Using two NIC cards and a homemade crossover cable, I have
cobbled together a sort of a network between my HP 8240
(233mhz Win98SE) and my HP 533w(2ghz WinXP). I can use it
to play head to head lan games, and not much else. I
cannot get XP and 98SE to play nice and share files or a
dialup internet connection. Two questions:

1. Can this be done, and if so how?
2. Would having a hub improve things at all?

I tried ICS, but there is no provision in ICS to share a
dialup conenction.

Thanks for any help!

Yes. See below.

Probably not. Since you can play games between computers, the network
hardware is working OK.
I tried ICS, but there is no provision in ICS to share a

I've written a web page showing how to share XP's dialup connection
using ICS:

Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics

In the process of setting up ICS, you'll run XP's Network Setup Wizard
on both computers. That should make all the right settings for file
sharing, too.

If there are still problems, follow the steps here:
