home network refuses to work

We have two computers, one a desktop directly connected to the router
and cable modem and the printer. A notebook directly connected to the
router.
The problem is, the network connections do not work, they are there,
but not available.
I have run the connection wizard several times, uninstalled my network
cards and let windows reinstall. Still cannot access the network with
the notebook.
The weird thing of all of this is, that I used to could access the
network with my notebook.
Now the really weird thing is both computers show XP Pro and they
definitely are not. They are XP home editions. Both updated and both
running AVG antivirus, and Zone Alarm free.
I have tried to make sure that ZA has both IP addresses.

I am fair to middling sharp about settings in my computer and I do not
mind registry moves, but I have to know and understand what I have to
change and to what before I make those kinds of changes.

So my question is how do I make Windows recognise my network and allow
my notebook to access files on the desktop and how to change the XP Pro
back to Home on the properties box.

Thank You for all of your advice in advance

Sandy

Sandy,

Many antiviruses, possibly including AVG, include antiworm components that must
be configured. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be the
cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

For more immediate help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

hi
first thanks for the reply and info,,, I have downloaded the browstat
and i have been reading all of your pages trying to learn what i can.
Second here is the thing, i went thru the steps to copy the file into
my windows file.and i used the name My Utility. But when I go to the
advanced folder to find the path this is what I get, "C:\Program
Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\lib\ext\QTJava.zip" That is nothing like what
u have in yours. What am I doing wrong and why am I getting this. In
the meantime I can not open browstat in command prompt.

Another thing here is one report for ipconfig/all

OK, here's a start. DESKTOP is running IPV6, aka Teredo Tunneling. Start by
removing IPV6 - read the article, and follow the links.

Sandy,

OK, XP Home will give the "Could not connect to registry, error = 53", as the
Remote Registry service is required here, and XP Home doesn't have that (no
network administrative access either).

So, let's run CDiag. CDiag you can read about in my article, then build
yourself:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html

Take the following code (everything INSIDE the "#####" lines). Please DO NOT
include ANY portion of the "#####" lines. (Please verify computer names and ip
addresses).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

here is desktop cdiag

OK, Sandy,

There are just 2 faults indicated by CDiag.
# Desktop cannot "net view" SandraLaptop by name.
# Desktop cannot "net view" SandraLaptop by IP address.

Is NetBIOS Over TCP explicitly Enabled on SandraLaptop?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Components>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#Components

Other than possibly missing NBT, this is quite likely a personal firewall
problem on SandraLaptop. Look for any security program, such as an antivirus or
antiworm
protection.

Thank you very much for all of your help
I am investigating the personal firewall situation. But I would like
to know your opinion on whether or not we should redo the whole Linksys
setup, It has caused problems in the past, I think,,especially when I
had the laptop on wireless. It always lost connection to the network.

I have checked the NBT and it is set that way.

thanks again
Sandy

Sandy,

I'll be glad to review the Linksys WiFi situation with you. I'm not sure how
it's involved in this problem, though. From looking at the ipconfig logs, it
appears that both DESKTOP and sandralaptop are using Ethernet. Or am I missing
some detail?

Hi Chuck,
Thank u so much for all of your help.
This is what I think,, u were right about the security issue... Over
the weekend while I had the laptop off line,,, I uninstalled all of my
security and av and spybot and alll of that.
Then we took off the cable modem cable to router and stopped all
internet traffic. The network picked up and everything works great.
Then online again redid my ZA and AVG. One note here, Windows Defender
I did not uninstall. ZA recognized the network and so far all is doing
good. I have yet to put Sybot and Spyware Blaster back on, but have
installed AdAware.

Thank you again for all of your help, Greatly Appreciated
