Chuck (and others)

I have tried almost all of the suggestions that have been thrown around to
try and solve this problem, but still I get no change in the network! Here
is all the info on the setup:

The network consists of:

Hub/switch: Accton 8 port hub.
Router: NetComm NB1300 ADSL Modem/Router
PC1: Windows XP Pro SP2 - PC name "FAMILY" (this is the main PC that is on
almost all the time)
PC2: Windows 98SE - PC name "JESS" (this is the 2nd PC on sometimes)
PC3: Windows 98SE - PC name "SHED" (this PC is on rarely and has been
disconnected until we solve the probs with the network).
Network Workgroup "MSHOME"

All machines are now assigned an IP address by the router, which is set for
IP address 192.168.1.x with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (XP was manually
assigned for port forwarding reasons, but I have set it back to auto to try
and solve this problem)

All machines run Zone Alarm Pro, which has been set to allow trusted access
to the network and all PC names (tests with ZA disabled also been run).
Windows firewall in XP has been disabled.

All machines can ping each other no problems, and all access internet via
modem/router without any problems.

When PC3 was connected, PC2 & PC3 could 'see' each other in Network
Neighborhood and could share files OK, but PC3 had the exact same
difficulties as PC2 has accessing PC1, hence to simplify things it is
temporarily taken out of the loop so we are now dealing with just "family"
and "jess".

All the suggested checks/changes to the registry have been done as per
previous posts.

Problem that still persists: "family" can access the shared folders on
"jess", however "jess" does not appear in 'my network places' and it doesn't
show up in the 'workgroup computers'. From "jess" you cannot see or access
"family" at all, even when the same person is logged on both machines.

XP does have the Guest account activated, two main users have passwords and
the same password and user ID is used on the 98 machines. Guest access is
not blocked in the registry.....

So, here are the relevant results from ipconfig, browstat and nbstat. I'm
not sure why "jess" has a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0, the DHCP server on the
router is set to 255.255.255.0, and if I try to manually assign an IP
address to "jess" (even the same address as it is now allocated and change
the allocation addresses of the dhcp server) it will no longer access the
internet or the network at all - only works with auto assigned IP address!!

I recommend you follow my walk-thru guide at www.careyholzman.com/net1.htm

You say you tried all the posted fixes, yet I have posted this numerous
times and I can tell from your posted settings you didn't apply the changes
I recommend. If you want your network to work, my advice is to stop trying
to make sense of it, follow the advice blindly and once it works for you,
work backwards to understand it. In other words, don't say "that can't be my
problem because..." until you try it, regardless if it makes sense to you or
not.

Keeping ZoneAlarm installed while you're trying to diagnose a network is
like trying to fix an engine on a car with the hood down.

No matter how certain you are of your firewall settings, it's one more
possibility until you remove it completely.

OK Carey, I have now gone through your step-by-step guide on both computers
(again), ALL instructions have been carried out on both computers, including
uninstalling Zone Alarm from both.

The exact same problem is still evident. From 98SE when I go to Network
Neighborhood all I can see is "Jess", the other computer doesn't show up.
From the XP 'My Network Places' only the "Family" is visible, yet I can map
the shared folders and read/write to the shared folders on the 98 machine.

Next I disabled the browser on the 98SE machine and re-booted - same problem
except now in Network Neighborhood on 98SE when you click "Entire Network"
you get the message "Unable to browse the network", and "Jess" is no longer
visible.

So, next suggestion anyone please???

No probs with that, just one question while I'm rebooting things - do you
want the browser on 98SE disabled or not?

I'm also curious about the 255.0.0.0 subnet!!

I recommend you follow my walk-thru guide at www.careyholzman.com/net1.htm

You say you tried all the posted fixes, yet I have posted this numerous
times and I can tell from your posted settings you didn't apply the
changes I recommend. If you want your network to work, my advice is to
stop trying to make sense of it, follow the advice blindly and once it
works for you, work backwards to understand it. In other words, don't say
"that can't be my problem because..." until you try it, regardless if it
makes sense to you or not.

Keeping ZoneAlarm installed while you're trying to diagnose a network is
like trying to fix an engine on a car with the hood down.

No matter how certain you are of your firewall settings, it's one more
possibility until you remove it completely.

Carey

OK Carey, I have now gone through your step-by-step guide on both
computers (again), ALL instructions have been carried out on both
computers, including uninstalling Zone Alarm from both.

The exact same problem is still evident. From 98SE when I go to Network
Neighborhood all I can see is "Jess", the other computer doesn't show up.
From the XP 'My Network Places' only the "Family" is visible, yet I can
map the shared folders and read/write to the shared folders on the 98
machine.

Next I disabled the browser on the 98SE machine and re-booted - same
problem except now in Network Neighborhood on 98SE when you click "Entire
Network" you get the message "Unable to browse the network", and "Jess" is
no longer visible.

So, next suggestion anyone please???

Chuck (and others)

I have tried almost all of the suggestions that have been thrown around
to try and solve this problem, but still I get no change in the network!
Here is all the info on the setup:

The network consists of:

Hub/switch: Accton 8 port hub.
Router: NetComm NB1300 ADSL Modem/Router
PC1: Windows XP Pro SP2 - PC name "FAMILY" (this is the main PC that is
on almost all the time)
PC2: Windows 98SE - PC name "JESS" (this is the 2nd PC on sometimes)
PC3: Windows 98SE - PC name "SHED" (this PC is on rarely and has been
disconnected until we solve the probs with the network).
Network Workgroup "MSHOME"

All machines are now assigned an IP address by the router, which is set
for IP address 192.168.1.x with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (XP was
manually assigned for port forwarding reasons, but I have set it back to
auto to try and solve this problem)

All machines run Zone Alarm Pro, which has been set to allow trusted
access to the network and all PC names (tests with ZA disabled also been
run). Windows firewall in XP has been disabled.

All machines can ping each other no problems, and all access internet
via modem/router without any problems.

When PC3 was connected, PC2 & PC3 could 'see' each other in Network
Neighborhood and could share files OK, but PC3 had the exact same
difficulties as PC2 has accessing PC1, hence to simplify things it is
temporarily taken out of the loop so we are now dealing with just
"family" and "jess".

All the suggested checks/changes to the registry have been done as per
previous posts.

Problem that still persists: "family" can access the shared folders on
"jess", however "jess" does not appear in 'my network places' and it
doesn't show up in the 'workgroup computers'. From "jess" you cannot
see or access "family" at all, even when the same person is logged on
both machines.

XP does have the Guest account activated, two main users have passwords
and the same password and user ID is used on the 98 machines. Guest
access is not blocked in the registry.....

So, here are the relevant results from ipconfig, browstat and nbstat.
I'm not sure why "jess" has a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0, the DHCP server
on the router is set to 255.255.255.0, and if I try to manually assign
an IP address to "jess" (even the same address as it is now allocated
and change the allocation addresses of the dhcp server) it will no
longer access the internet or the network at all - only works with auto
assigned IP address!!

say "that can't be my problem because..." until you try it, regardless
if it makes sense to you or not.

Keeping ZoneAlarm installed while you're trying to diagnose a network
is like trying to fix an engine on a car with the hood down.

Neighborhood all I can see is "Jess", the other computer doesn't show
up. From the XP 'My Network Places' only the "Family" is visible, yet I
can map the shared folders and read/write to the shared folders on the
98 machine.

Next I disabled the browser on the 98SE machine and re-booted - same
problem except now in Network Neighborhood on 98SE when you click
"Entire Network" you get the message "Unable to browse the network", and
"Jess" is no longer visible.

So, next suggestion anyone please???

Chuck (and others)

I have tried almost all of the suggestions that have been thrown
around to try and solve this problem, but still I get no change in the
network! Here is all the info on the setup:

The network consists of:

Hub/switch: Accton 8 port hub.
Router: NetComm NB1300 ADSL Modem/Router
PC1: Windows XP Pro SP2 - PC name "FAMILY" (this is the main PC that
is on almost all the time)
PC2: Windows 98SE - PC name "JESS" (this is the 2nd PC on sometimes)
PC3: Windows 98SE - PC name "SHED" (this PC is on rarely and has been
disconnected until we solve the probs with the network).
Network Workgroup "MSHOME"

All machines are now assigned an IP address by the router, which is
set for IP address 192.168.1.x with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (XP was
manually assigned for port forwarding reasons, but I have set it back
to auto to try and solve this problem)

All machines run Zone Alarm Pro, which has been set to allow trusted
access to the network and all PC names (tests with ZA disabled also
been run).

Problem that still persists: "family" can access the shared folders
on "jess", however "jess" does not appear in 'my network places' and
it doesn't show up in the 'workgroup computers'. From "jess" you
cannot see or access "family" at all, even when the same person is
logged on both machines.

XP does have the Guest account activated, two main users have
passwords and the same password and user ID is used on the 98
machines. Guest access is not blocked in the registry.....

So, here are the relevant results from ipconfig, browstat and nbstat.
I'm not sure why "jess" has a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0, the DHCP
server on the router is set to 255.255.255.0, and if I try to manually
assign an IP address to "jess" (even the same address as it is now
allocated and change the allocation addresses of the dhcp server) it
will no longer access the internet or the network at all - only works
with auto assigned IP address!!

Excellent! Please sign my guestbook at www.careyholzman.com (the link is

Thanks and enjoy your network!

Thanks Carey,

Just to let you know that ZA is now setup on both machines and working
fine - all network features functioning great!

I can't beleive after all that the damn modem/router was the problem!
ARRRGG!! Just goes to show doesn't it!

Anyway, thanks again to you (and Chuck) for all your patience and help with
this.... I'll head on over and sign your guestbook now..

Cheers, and have a Happy Newyear..

To me, and I've not been following this, the dead-give-away is the
failure to get a good IP/Mask at Jess.

If the router is providing DHCP, then all machines should have something
like the following:

IP Address........... 192.168.1.100 (guessing at 100 being first)
Subnet Mask.......... 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway...... 192.168.1.1 (assuming the router at 1.1)

Each machine/node should have a different IP Address, but the subnet
mask and the default gateway should be the same across all machines.

Yep, that was the problem. A reset of the router back to default seemed to
remedy the fault, although not sure what caused the router to have this
hicup in the first place??!!!??!!!

Certainly explains why fiddling with the computers all this time wasn't
making any difference!!!!!
