home network problems, plz help!!!

i am trying to connect to a home network using my computer, however it doesnt
want to connect to the internet and when i start msn messenger it says i have
an invalid ip address, how do i deal with this and how do i find it? and also
how do i configure my computer settings so i can browse online because at the
moment its not working on internet. i have the tv screens at the bottom of
the monitor which when i put my cursor over it says connected 400 mbps or
something.

any help will be appreciated.

p.n both the computers r running windows xp

protocols, components, subnet, workgroup, etc.
